Man dies in Camberwell house fire

A house fire in Camberwell has killed a 25-year-old man in the early hours this morning.

Neighbors frantically called 000 after hearing screams and realising that the house next to them was on fire, while the victim’s housemates tried to save him.

The female and male housemates aged in their 20s tried to rescue the man, but the flames forced them back.

The male housemate attempted to enter his room by smashing open the victim’s bedroom window, but was unsuccessful in his attempts.

Firefighters rushed to extinguish the house fire that occured just after midnight. It took 40 minutes to extinguish the fire.

Fire alarms were not working. The house had just been moved into months ago and was due for renovations.

The young man was found dead in his bedroom and is believed to be an international student.

“This is a tragic fire. When someone loses their life like they have, it’s pretty hard,” Cdr Whittaker tells the Herald Sun.

The fire is believed to be accidental, invesitgators are yet to report any findings.
