Winx wins third straight title

Racehorse joins illustrious club.

Champion mare Winx has taken out her third consecutive Racehorse of the Year award on Thursday evening, becoming the third horse to achieve the record feat.

She joins dual Cox Plate winner Sunline and unsurpassed superstar Black Caviar as the only three-time victors of the award.

Winx has dominated the track all year-long, and currently holds a 27 race-streak which she’ll be looking to add to at Flemington this Saturday for the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes.

Many believe this could be the special thoroughbred’s second last race before her pending retirement, fans are expected to pack out the Melbourne racecourse to witness history.

Her trainer Chris Waller and jockey Hugh Bowman had a year to remember, guiding Winx to eight wins from eight starts, including six at Group 1 level.

Judges voted on a 3-2-1 basis at the annual awards night, and there was no surprise when the mighty mare collected a maximum 150 votes from 50 adjudicators.

The accolades didn’t stop there, with Waller taking home the Bart Cummings Award for the highest amount of Group 1 winners he was responsible for with 13 victories.

Waller expressed great gratitude to what Winx has been able to achieve.

“It’s quite surreal. We’ve not really woken up (we can’t believe) we’re involved in it,” Winx’s trainer Chris Waller told Herald Sun.

“You’ve got to put the pressure of training her into perspective. If she wins or gets beaten it’s not going to change anything.”

Winx also received an award for Champion Middle Distance at the awards ceremony.

All eyes will be fixated on the blue and white jockey this Saturday as Winx attempts to achieve what no racehorse has ever conquered.
