100 articles – ‘Outfoxed’

Rupert Murdoch's Fox News has a well-known right-wing bias and Glen Greenwald's film Outfoxed is seen as evidence of the mogul's 'war on journalism'. Selected by Jean Kemshal-Bell, Outfoxed is part of our 100 articles project.

Outfoxed by Glen Greenwald

Fox News has become the poster child for far-right American ideologies. Despite using the tagline ‘fair and balanced’, Fox News is known internationally for its explicit conservative bias.

Made on a shoestring budget, Robert Greenwald’s Outfoxed highlights these biases, stressing the consequence of so much of the media being controlled largely by one man.

Interviewing former staff members, and getting hold of internal memos, the documentary shows how journalists were forced to push a right-wing agenda.

What’s most alarming is just how misled Fox viewers are. For example, survey results shown in the film demonstrate that almost half of Fox’s viewers believe weapons of mass destruction were found in Iraq.  And Fox is the US’ most watched news station.

While it’s a very interesting documentary, what is most remarkable about it is how it went viral on the internet. Watched by millions, it reminds us of the power of the internet to give independent media a voice.
