The Matildas will get another chance to excite football fans on home soil with Australia named as the host nation for the 2026 Women’s Asian Cup.
The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) executive committee in Bangkok confirmed the decision on Wednesday after Australia was the only nation to submit a bid to host the competition.
Chairperson Kanya Keomany said that during last year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia, new benchmarks were set, showcasing once again the strength of women’s football in Asia.
“Australia presents the opportunities to build on the commercial appeal of the competition and engage with more fans than ever before.”
“I am confident that Football Australia will stage a memorable spectacle that will not only elevate the women’s game but also set the standard for future editions of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup.”
Australia remained the only bidder after Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Uzbekistan withdrew. This marks the second time in history that the nation will hold the Women’s Asia Cup. It was first hosted in Adelaide in 2006.
Matches will take place in NSW, Queensland and Western Australia.
