Australian basketballer Georgia Amoore has been drafted with pick six in the WNBA draft to the Washington Mystics.
Originally from Ballarat, the 24-year-old will become the newest addition to the 13 Australian players currently playing in the league.
Amoore played five seasons in America’s college system across two teams, averaging 19.6 points and 6.9 assists during the 2024-25 season for the Kentucky Wildcats. In her time in the NCAA Division I women’s basketball, she became only the third player to record over 2300 points and over 800 assists. She also broke the single-season assist record for the Kentucky Wings this season with 213.
At 5’6″, Amoore will enter the league as one of the shortest players, which she said she can use to her advantage.
“For as long as people have called me too short, I’ve been working on how to counteract that,” she told ESPN reporter Holly Rowe.
“It’s not a shock to me that I have to work in different ways … but with my competitive background I think I have a little bit of dog in me that’s going to keep me fighting.”
Amoore said Ballarat “is a long way away,” but her persistence got her to where she is today.
“I’ve taken every opportunity that’s opened up, made the most of it and now I’m here.”
As projected, Paige Bueckers was picked first overall by the Dallas Wings.
The WNBA season will start 16 May, 2025.
