Flights delayed after fog at Melbourne Airport

Travellers have been urged to check their flight details.

Planes have been left grounded at Melbourne Airport on Monday morning due to low visibility caused by a thick fog.

Flight have been delayed since 9am and low visibility has affected arrival. Departure times have been delayed by up to an hour.

Melbourne Airport has urged travellers to check their flight details.

“Arrivals and departures may be delayed. For flight details please check with your airline,” @melair tweeted.

The airport’s website explains that safety of landing aircrafts is priority even if delays continue throughout the day for passengers on the ground.

“When visibility at the airport is restricted, aircraft movements need to be reduced on Melbourne Airport’s two runways to ensure an additional safety buffer is provided to separate aircraft,” it says.

“Air Traffic Control will also allow greater spacing of flights on the runway, meaning fewer aircraft are able to land and take-off,”

“Priority is giving to landing aircraft, meaning some departures may be delayed.”
