La Trobe launches Sport Journalism degree

Interested in journalism and sport and thinking about what to study next year? You might want to consider La Trobe's new three-year Sport Journalism degree which will enrol its first batch of students for the start of the 2011 academic year.

If you’re interested in journalism and sport, La Trobe’s new Bachelor of Journalism (Sport) gives you the opportunity to combine study of the two in a new degree offered for the first time in 2011.

This vocationally-oriented three-year degree – the only one of its kind in Victoria – has been developed in consultation with a range of sport media professionals. It will be led by the newest member of La Trobe’s Journalism team, David Lowden, who has had over two decades experience as a sport journalist, broadcaster, and producer.

The degree will feature a similar range of journalism subjects to the current Bachelor of Journalism degree, as well as four first-year subjects from La Trobe’s Business (Sport Management) degree, and new sport journalism subjects focusing on reporting and sport media issues. The latter two subjects will be available as electives to a number of existing La Trobe students during 2011, including all those enrolled in the Bachelor of Journalism and Bachelor of Media Studies.

You can hear more from David Lowden in his recent interview with Ryan Jon in the lastest episode of upstart’s audio program, upcast. For any queries about either of our two journalism degrees please email La Trobe’s Journalism coordinator, Lawrie Zion on l.zion@latrobe.edu.au.
