Matildas coaching question remains unanswered after 2-0 win

An announcement on the next head coach is expected to be made mid-year.

Despite their 2-0 win over Korea Republic on Monday night in the second of two friendlies, questions remain over who the next head coach of the Matildas will be.

Current coach Tom Sermanni has been in the role for eight months as ‘caretaker’ after the departure of Tony Gustavsson. Throughout that time, Football Australia have been searching for the next person to take charge of the team.

Post-game, captain Steph Catley said that it has been difficult for the team with the coaching situation in “limbo”.

“You don’t have a clear direction in how we’re going to play moving forward.”

Sermanni, who is in his third stint as Matildas coach, had time post-game to reflect on his favourite moments over the past eight months.

“The favourite moments for me [are] when we’ve played games at home and I’ve walked out and I’ve seen the crowd and I’ve seen the reaction to the Matildas … that’s my favourite time,” he said.

Since coming in as caretaker, Sermanni has coached the Matildas to five wins, five losses and one draw.

Current reports suggest that Olympique Lyonnais coach Joe Montemurro is the front-runner for the head coaching role, however he is yet to be officially confirmed.

An announcement on who will be the next Matildas head coach is expected to come before the Matildas’ mid-year friendlies against Argentina.
