Melbourne WebFest selections: Great.

In our next Melbourne WebFest preview series, we preview The Cameralla's modestly titled, Great.

Ahead of the inaugural Melbourne Web Series Festival on 20 July, we’re profiling all 30 series that made the Official Selection list. Next up is Great., created by The Cameralla.

A series of two-handers set within a doctors waiting room, this series demonstrates that “when life goes from not so good to that slightly surreal worse. It’s not just bad, it’s way worse. It’s Great.

Filmed within Melbourne, the group of seven were inspired to create something that strayed away from the conventional rules of narrative and instead create a series touching on life’s tendencies.

“Great. Isn’t like something you will see anywhere else. It’s not Big Bang Theory. It’s not How I Met Your Mother. And it’s definitely not Two and a Half Men. It’s a show that makes you feel good about being you and having avoided a Great. situation.”

More along the lines of shows such as Louie or Girls, Great. consists of six two-handers that will undoubtedly get you laughing (and cringing) in The Cameralla’s freakishly artistic interpretation of life’s dreadful situations.

What do you want people to take away from your series?

This series is a small reminder that life is funny and weird, and that we shouldn’t take it so seriously. The title “Great.” is like life itself: A small word that implies something fantastic ended so quickly by a tiny, tragic punctuation. We want people to belly laugh and shake their heads with big, fat grins, because why not? What else is there?

We also realise Great, gets a bit gross at times, so we’d also like people to take away their buckets of vomit. ‘Cause we’re not their mums.

Why make a web series?

It’s the future of content consumption. Audiences want more and more content and the web series medium gives filmmakers the perfect forum to both test their ideas and reach a huge audience. Broadcasters are already catching onto this fact with companies like HBO, Netflix and FOX investing in web Series and making them available through their online streaming services. We want to be a part of the wave.
