Melbourne is often identified as the fashion capital of Australia, the café capital of Australia as well as the music capital of Australia. What niche group best encapsulates these three aspects of Melbourne life? Arguably, the answer is hipsters.

But what is a hipster? Some say they’re try-hards, others say they’re people who browse through op-shops and listen to bands that nobody else has heard of. Or are they just people who study arts and drink a lot of coffee?

“The accidental hipster” explores these stereotypes as we delve into the life of Sarah Mott, a 21-year-old student who is all too familiar with the ‘hipster’ label.
