Three in a row: Piastri makes history at Miami Grand Prix

Oscar Piastri’s third straight Grand Prix victory has launched him into the spotlight as Formula 1’s newest title contender.

Oscar Piastri’s commanding victory at the 2025 Miami Grand Prix marks a significant milestone in his rising Formula 1 career. Securing his third consecutive win and fourth in six races, Piastri has firmly established himself as a leading contender in the championship standings.

Starting in fourth place on the grid, Piastri overtook key title competitors, including Max Verstappen, to lead a dominant McLaren one-two finish alongside teammate Lando Norris. The win extends Piastri’s lead in the drivers championship standings to 16 points over Norris and 32 points over Verstappen, the reigning champion.

A first-lap clash between Norris and Verstappen set the tone for the race, while three virtual safety car periods due to stoppages added further challenges. Despite the chaos, Piastri maintained composure and capitalised on opportunities to secure the win.

Piastri acknowledged how far he and his team have come in such a short time.

“I remember two years ago in Miami we were genuinely the slowest team, I think we got lapped twice,” he said post-race.

“To now have won the grand prix by over 35 seconds to third is an unbelievable result.”

Piastri now becomes the first McLaren driver to win three consecutive races since Mika Häkkinen in 1998 and the first Australian to achieve this feat since Alan Jones in 1981. This latest win marks McLaren’s resurgence, with the team now holding a commanding 105-point lead in the team standings.

All eyes now turn to the iconic Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix in two weeks time. Piastri will arrive in Italy with a chance to make it four straight victories — a feat that would cement his status as a genuine title contender.
