Two Swedish football fans have been killed and a third person has been seriously injured following an attack in Brussels overnight.
Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo is treating the shooting as an act of “terrorism”.
“My deepest condolences to the relatives of this cowardly attack in Brussels,” he said.
“We are monitoring the situation and ask the people of Brussels to be vigilant.”
The incident occurred around 7pm local time, approximately 4.5km from King Baudouin Stadium where Belgium and Sweden were playing each other in a Euro qualifying soccer match.
It was alleged that the gunman shot at someone in the foyer of a building, before firing at two people in a taxi. Wearing a fluorescent orange jacket, the alleged suspect fled the scene and remains on the run. A manhunt has been actioned to find the offender.
Local media have identified the man to be a 45-year-old Tunisian who has been living in Brussels and has claimed to be part of Islamic terrorist group ISIS.
In a video surfacing on X, he claimed to have killed three Swedish people, two of which were confirmed to have been sporting Swedish national soccer shirts.
The European Championship qualifier was abandoned at half-time amid fears of safety for the people at the match. Those at King Baudouin Stadium were locked inside the ground for two hours following the announcement.
