A US Army sergeant is in custody after shooting and wounding five co-workers inside Fort Stewart in Georgia, which resulted in a brief lockdown of the military base.
Brigadier General John Lubas told reporters that the suspect is 28-year-old Sergeant Quornelius Radford and that he appeared to have used a personal handgun in the attack.
According to General Lubas, Sergeant Radford opened fire inside Fort Stewart right before 11am, wounding five, before being tackled “immediately and without hesitation” by fellow soldiers.
Fort Stewart was placed on lockdown at 11:04am along with three schools in the area. Sergeant Radford was apprehended by law enforcement at 11:35am. Soon after, all lockdowns were lifted.
The five wounded soldiers were initially treated at the scene, before being moved to Winn Army Community Hospital. Three of the wounded needed surgical intervention.
“Thankfully all [of the wounded] are in stable condition and all are expected to recover,” Lubas said.
Two of them have been taken to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah for further care.
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp wrote on X that he is remaining in close contact with law enforcement.
“We are keeping the victims, their families, and all those who answer the call to serve in our hearts and prayers, and we ask that Georgians everywhere do the same,” he added.
White House officials have confirmed that President Donald Trump has been briefed on the shooting.
The motivation behind the attack is still unknown.
