Victorian first-class and Australian test cricketer Will Pucovski has announced his retirement from professional cricket after years of regular concussion injuries.
Speaking on SEN’s Whately, Pucovski announced the decision after a “really difficult year”.
“A lot of the symptoms haven’t really gone away which has made this decision come to a head,” he said.
“The medical panel recommended that I retire from professional cricket.”
The 27-year-old has suffered 13 known concussions through his career and said he still struggles with regular symptoms.
“The hard bit to come to terms with to a degree is I know what I was like before I suffered these concussions and I know what I’m like now,” he said.
“My family have noticed a bit of a difference in me and that part is quite scary and it’s quite scary for them too.”
Pucovski played 36 first-class games for Victoria, notching seven hundreds with a batting average of 45.19.
From a young age, Pucovski had aspirations to play cricket for his country.
“It had always been my dream … since I can remember to play for Australia.”
The Victorian achieved his dream in 2021, playing one test for Australia against India at the SCG, making a half-century in his first innings.
He will now move into a role as head coach of the Premier Men’s Program at the Melbourne Cricket Club, where he previously debuted in the 1st XI at the age of 16.
