47 injured after car drives into Liverpool FC victory crowd

Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims says the incident is not currently being treated as terrorism.

A 53-year-old man has been arrested after he drove his car through a crowd, injuring at least 47 people celebrating Liverpool FC’s Premier League title victory.

Assistant Chief Constable of Merseyside Police Jenny Sims said that emergency services responded to reports of a car colliding with “a number of pedestrians” in Liverpool city centre as the parade was ending around 6pm.

Sims said that the car stopped at the scene, and the British man who is believed to be the driver was arrested.

“What I can tell you is that we believe this to be an isolated incident, and we are not currently looking for anyone else in relation to it,” she said.

“The incident is not currently being treated as terrorism.”

North West Ambulance Service’s Dave Kitchen said of the 47 reported injured, 20 were treated at the scene with minor injuries, and 27 were hospitalised around Liverpool.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service chief fire officer Nick Searle said that four people were trapped under the vehicle and had to be rescued by crews.

“Our crews rapidly lifted the vehicle [and] removed three adults and one child from beneath and passed them to our ambulance service colleagues,” he said.

55-year-old witness Les Winsper said he had “never seen anything like it”.

“People started banging on the windows, then they smashed the windows, and he panicked and put his foot down,” he said.

“He then hit someone, and that person has gone in the air and he’s ploughed through the rest of them.”

Liverpool City Council Leader Liam Robinson described the incident to “cast a very dark shadow” to end a “joyous” bank holiday weekend.
