Australia Post has stopped the postage of parcels to the US and Puerto Rico, “until further notice” and effective today.

The government-owned organisation, claimed that “numerous postal operators internationally” had done the same in response to Donald Trump’s tariffs on low-value items.

“As a result of recently announced changes to import tariffs for postal items sent to the US and Puerto Rico, Australia Post will temporarily partially suspend postal services to the United States and Puerto Rico, effective 26 August 2025 until further notice,” a statement from the Australia Post said. 

US president Donald Trump’s tariff adjustments to parcel customs regulations means that low-value items going to the US were subject to the “de minimis” policy, which allowed shipments under US$800 ($AUD1230) to enter the nation duty-free until recently.

Last month, Trump had issued an executive order that ended the policy, with effect from 29 August 2025. After reintroducing this week, duties on parcels will be equal to the tariffs applied to that nation. For Australia, the standard 10 percent duty applies to Australian goods.

Only the delivery of mail, documents and gifts under US$100 (AUD$153.66) will continue when the change takes effect. Unless they qualify for an exception, postal items sent to the US and Puerto Rico that are lodged on or after 26 August will not be processed until further notice. 

Australia businesses that sell to American consumers will be affected, as they will be blocked from shipping to the US via Australia Post.

Australia Post is working towards a solution primarily for businesses in collaboration with Zonos, a licensed third-party provider for the US Customs and Border Protection.
