Brazilians protest against ex-president amnesty

New amendments mean former president Bolsonaro could be granted amnesty for planning a coup.

Thousands of Brazilians have gathered in major cities to protest against the National Congress decision, demanding that no amnesty be granted to the country’s former president Jair Bolsonaro.

The conservative leader was sentenced to 27 years behind bars, on charges relating to plotting a coup, including a plan to assassinate current President Luiz Inácio Lula de Silva and kill a Supreme Court judge.

On Tuesday, the lower house of parliament passed a constitutional amendment, making it harder for lawmakers to be penalised. The following day, they also voted to fast-track a bill that could grant amnesty to Bolsonaro, his allies and his supporters for their attempts to illegally keep the ex-president in power.

Now, protesters in all 26 states are voicing their anger toward the conservative-dominated lower house decision.

Local singer Fernanda Takai was a part of the protest in Belo Horizonte, condemning the bills that assist Bolsonaro and other politicians.

“We need to take a stand, to show how angry we are,” Takai told protestors, Estado de Minas reported.

The ex-president who is currently under house arrest, faces up to 40 years in prison but maintains he will run in the 2026 election, despite Brazil’s top electoral court barring him from running until 2030.
