Brisbane switches to digital public transport ticketing system

The COVID-delayed "smart ticketing" service is due to be unrolled on buses, trams and trains.

Brisbane’s switch to a digital ticketing system for buses and metro is due to start next week.

Brisbane City Council have announced final preparations to introduce “smart ticketing” on bus, tram and train services, a plan that had previously been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This new system will allow passengers to pay fares directly from their mobile devices or physical bank cards, moving away from Brisbane’s Go-Cards that have been in operation for the last 20 years.

Queensland Transport Minister Brent Mickelberg has said that while this form of ticketing will be widespread, it wouldn’t be the sole form of payment available.

“Those who choose not to, or are unable to use a credit card or smart phone can keep tapping their go card until a replacement reloadable card is available,” he said.

One of the state’s main transport operators Translink had trialed smart ticketing on Gold Coast buses, trams and trains earlier this month to a positive reception. Deputy Director-General Dr Deborah Hume anticipated the city’s locals and visitors would “further embrace this easy way to pay”.
