Bundoora station part of government rail plan

La Trobe Station also part of university plan.

La Trobe University’s Bundoora campus would get a train station under the planed suburban rail loop announced by Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews yesterday.

The proposed station would be linked to the existing Heidelberg and Reservoir stations and be part of the line connecting the university to Doncaster, Cheltenham and Melbourne Airport.

It is estimated that a trip from the Bundoora campus to Monash University in Clayton will take 25 minutes, with trains traveling up to 130km/h through tunnels.

As part of La Trobe’s University City of the Future plan the government and university have been working together to explore ways to improve the campus’ public transport links for some time.

The date of construction of the Bundoora station was not announced, but it would be after the South-East section from Cheltenham to Box Hill, which is planned for 2022.

Daniel Andrews posted on Facebook that the line will be Melbourne’s busiest taking.

“It will also take tens of thousands of people off trains heading to the CBD, and it will smash congestion on our roads like nothing else,” he said.

If re-elected in November’s state election the government has committed $300 million for planning the project, which is predicted to cost $50 billion and include up to 12 new stations.
