Cast members announced for new HBO Harry Potter series

HBO has promised that the John Lithgow-lead series will be a "faithful adaptation" of the books.

HBO have announced a number of roles for the upcoming Harry Potter TV series.

After unofficial reports of who is playing key roles, the network has confirmed that award winning actor John Lithgow will be cast as Dumbledore, Nick Frost as Hagrid, Janet McTeer as McGonagall and Paapa Essiedu as Snape.

The announcement was made by director and executive producer Mark Mylod and showrunner Francesca Gardiner.

“We’re delighted to have such extraordinary talent onboard, and we can’t wait to see them bring these beloved characters to new life,” they said.

Paul Whitehouse has also been confirmed as Filch and Luke Thallon as Quirrell.

The lead roles of Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger are yet to be announced, however, Cillian Murphy has been rumoured to be cast as Voldemort. Chairman and CEO of Warner Bros, Channing Dungey addressed these rumours in an interview with Deadline saying they are still looking at some different options and that they are “not quite ready there yet”.

“That’s an important role to get right,” he said.

Filming is set to begin by the end of the year, with each book being adapted into a season. Author of the Harry Potter books JK Rowling will be an executive producer, and the series is expected to be on HBO streaming services in 2026.
