Peter Dutton has proposed a new referendum on whether the government should be allowed to deport dual citizens.
The opposition leader spoke on Sunrise this morning about his proposed referendum, which would grant government ministers the power to revoke the citizenship of “terrorist” dual citizens.
When Sunrise presenter Natalie Barr asked if Australians could afford another referendum in a cost-of-living crisis, Dutton said that the safety of this country is a major priority.
“We believe that we want to keep people safe…we want to keep kids safe in our community, I don’t think you can put a price on that,” he said.
Dutton further defended his proposal by saying that the referendum would ensure Australia’s safety, unlike Albanese who he said lacked a clear reason for funding the 2023 Voice to Parliament referendum.
“The Prime Minister wouldn’t explain the logic, rationale and impact of the voice…What we’re proposing here is a discussion about whether we have adequate laws,” Dutton said.
In 2022 a high court ruling found that ministers could not deport criminal citizens as it was unconstitutional.
This proposal comes as the Guardian Essential Poll reports Dutton suffering his highest disapproval rate heading into the federal election.
