Tension began with JK Rowling’s public comments on gender and transgender issues, which many, including Watson, viewed as transphobic. Watson responded by publicly supporting trans rights, creating a rift between her and Rowling.
Is this the first time this has come up?
No. J.K. Rowling has been a polarising figure on transgender rights since 2019. In June 2020, she faced backlash after making sarcastic comments in a retweet of an article that used the phrase “people who menstruate” instead of “women”.
“‘People who menstruate,’” she wrote. “I’m sure there used to be a word for those people. Someone help me out. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?”
Several other posts concerning the trans community followed. Including a tweet in which Rowling claimed that if “sex isn’t real” then “same-sex attraction” isn’t real. She has since continued to express opposition to transgender-inclusive policies and laws. This isn’t the first time Rowling has locked heads with members of the Harry Potter cast.

Watson recently appeared on the Jay Shetty Podcast, emphasising that despite disagreeing with Rowling, “there’s just no world in which I could ever cancel her”. She added, “I believe no one is disposable”, noting that everyone deserves dignity and respect, regardless of the topic.
Watson admitted she wished they had the chance to discuss their differences privately but declined to elaborate further, saying she didn’t want to escalate what she described as a “really toxic debate”.

In a post on X, this week, Rowling expressed frustration that Watson and Daniel Radcliffe “continue to assume the role of de facto spokespeople for the world I created”. She acknowledged their legal right to their beliefs but criticized them for publicly critiquing her, saying:
“Emma and Dan in particular have both made it clear over the last few years that they think our former professional association gives them a particular right — nay, obligation — to critique me and my views in public.”
Rowling’s post grew increasingly critical, claiming Watson was “ignorant of how ignorant she is” due to her sheltered life. She suggested Watson would never face certain hardships, writing she’d “never need a homeless shelter” or endure “a mixed-sex hospital ward”.
