The Australian Government will lower fuel quality standards to allow for greater fuel supply due to imminent global fuel shortages amidst the war in the Middle East.
The 60-day relaxation will allow higher sulphur levels in Australian fuel, which will inject an extra 100 million litres a month.
The extra fuel will come from the Ampol refinery in Brisbane, which usually sells its lower quality fuel overseas.
The temporary change was announced by energy minister Chris Bowen, who attributed the measure to unnecessary consumer panic-buying as fuel prices increase.
“While Australian fuel consumption has not changed, this will help relieve pressure on distribution chains disrupted by elevated demand,” he said.
Bowen said that the extra supply will be prioritised for regional Australia, with a particular emphasis on Queensland.
Australia currently holds 36 days’ worth of petrol supplies.
