US President Donald Trump has announced that a 10-day ceasefire has been put in place between Israel and Lebanon.
This comes after Trump invited Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the White House for “meaningful talks”.
The agreement will pause airstrikes that have killed over 2,100 people and displaced more than 2.1 million.
Israeli troops will remain 10km inside the border of Southern Lebanon.
On the agreement, Netanyahu said, “We have an opportunity to make a historic peace agreement with Lebanon.”
He also said that peace talks require disarming Hezbollah.
Hezbollah has been fighting against Israel in southern Lebanon for the past six weeks. The Iranian-backed militant group appeared willing to participate in the ceasefire, but only if “a comprehensive halt to attacks” across Lebanon and “no freedom of movement for Israeli forces” is upheld.
“I did not agree to either of these,” Netanyahu said. “And indeed, neither of these conditions is being met.”
In a post on X, the Lebanese Army accused Israel of a “number of violations” after the ceasefire had been in place.
The Lebanese Army also issued a warning to residents, urging them to be cautious when entering towns and villages in the south of Lebanon and warning residents not to move south of the Litani River.
