Israeli air strike kills new military leader in Gaza

New Hamas leader Mohammed Odeh, along with his wife and two of his children, have been killed in an Israeli air strike.

At least five people, including Odeh and his family members, were killed and 12 were injured in the strike at a market in Gaza City, local hospitals confirmed.

The military group has confirmed his death occurred Tuesday morning local time, less than two weeks after his predecessor, Izz al-Din al-Haddad, was killed in another air strike. They said Odeh had been active with the group for more than three decades.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz had announced that the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) military had targeted and killed Odeh. The attack came on the eve of Eid al-Adha, a major Muslim holiday.

Thousands of people gathered through the streets of Gaza on Wednesday, where dozens of Palestinians carried Odeh’s body in a funeral procession.

On Wednesday evening, health officials have said at least seven people were killed and more than 20 wounded in an Israeli strike on an apartment building.

Israel has said it will continue to target Hamas militant leaders.
