A Blue Origin rocket containing Katy Perry and five other female passengers touched back down on Earth early this morning.
The short space mission was organised by Lauren Sánchez, the fiancée of Amazon owner Jeff Bezos. The spacecraft made its way to the Kármán line, which is the established boundary between Earth’s atmosphere and outer space
Perry and her fellow passengers were in space for just over 10 minutes before descending safely back to Earth, where they were greeted by members of their family, Bezos, and the press.
Perry told reporters on the ground she felt “super connected to love”.
“This experience has shown me you never know how much love is inside of you, how much love you have to give, and how loved you are until the day you launch,” she said.
Footage from aboard Blue Origin showed Perry holding up a butterfly cut-out with the set list of her upcoming tour, as well as a daisy to honour her daughter back on Earth.
In a briefing that occurred 20 minutes after Blue Origin touched down in the US, the pop star was asked how she hoped the mission would inspire change for people in the future. Perry said she hoped people would see the unity that occurred aboard the spacecraft and reflect that into the future.
“We weren’t just taking up space, we were making space.”
This mission marks 62 years since an all-female crew entered space in 1963.
