La Trobe confirms first COVID-19 case

The student is being treated.

In a message to students from Vice-Chancellor John Dewar, La Trobe University has confirmed that one student has tested positive for COVID-19 (novel coronavirus).

The student has attended classes within the past week and is currently receiving medical treatment.

All students and staff who have come into contact with the individual have been notified and directed to self-isolate.

La Trobe have confirmed that it will remain open on the advice of The Victorian Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).

This is the first case of confirmed COVID-19 at a Victorian university.

The university has provided students with health advice regarding preventative measures and symptoms to look out for.

Vice-Chancellor Dewar has said the university is working closely with DHHS to ensure that measures are in place for those directly affected and the wider university community.

“Everyone in Australia is dealing with the unprecedented fallout from the COVID-19 outbreak. It’s important that we acknowledge the human impact this is having and look after each other as a community,” he said in a statement to students.
