A brand new Melbourne Indoor Sports Centre, announced by the State Government today, will also double as the Formula 1 pit building at Albert Park, host of the Australian Grand Prix.
The redevelopment will deliver a new world class pit building to replace the current existing pit which according to AUSTADIUMS no longer meets FIA specifications for Formula 1 venues.
Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events Steve Dimopoulos says this investment will ensure that Melbourne can continue hosting world class events.
“The new Melbourne Indoor Sports Centre will give the Albert Park community a bigger and better home for local sport, while delivering modern race facilities for the Australian Grand Prix,” he said.
The new structure will have 14 upgraded garages, a modern race control centre and more room for media and administration.
Albert Park’s world renowned Paddock Club will also expand to host up to 5,000 patrons each day during the Grand Prix, with the goal of getting more people to the event.
This centre will also cater to the wider sporting community by featuring seven indoor multi-purpose courts with change rooms, two more than the current facility. The facility will have higher ceilings, and improved clubrooms for existing teams.
Demolition of the sports centre will begin on Friday 27 March and construction will continue throughout 2026, with the current pit building to be demolished ahead of the 2027 event.
