Olympics: Australia’s day nine recap

In today's paris headlines, Noemie Fox defies the odds to win gold, while the sharks get stunned by Japan

Australia picked up another gold medal at the Paris Olympics, this time in the Women’s Slalom KX-1. Other Aussie athletes also advanced in their pursuit for a medal.

Fox defies the odds to win gold

Noemie Fox, the sister of champion kayaker Jess Fox, has won a historic gold medal in the first ever women’s Olympic kayak cross event. After making it through her heat, quarter-final and a tense semi-final clash, Fox qualified for the final.

In the final, the 27-year-old faced an imposing task, taking on the world number one Kimberley Woods of Great Britain. After starting well, she passed Woods before holding the former champion off, following in her sister’s footsteps to win gold.

The triumph caps off a remarkable few months for Fox after winning a silver medal at the Global Qualification event in June. She was then selected for the Olympics as the last member of the Kayak team.

Big sister Jess was full of pride after Noemie’s remarkable win.

“I’m just full of emotion,” Fox told Nine. “And I’m so proud of her, and I’m just – I’m drenched, I jumped into the water.”

Noemie said was “in shock” after accepting her medal.

“I was just so happy to make it through to the semi-final,” she said. “That was my goal.”

Robinson wins silver in surfing event

Jack Robinson has gone down to Frenchman Kauli Vaast in the surfing gold medal match. Despite the loss Robinson still secured the silver medal after some fantastic performances. He beat Canadian Lucca Mesinas kick off his Olympic campaign, before defeating John John Florence of America, Aussie Ethan Ewing and then three-time Brazilian world champion Gabriel Medina to secure a chance at the gold medal. He was eventually outclassed by Vaast on his quest for Gold, losing 17.67 points to 7.83.

 Lewis bows out in semi-finals

Australia’s fastest woman Torrie Lewis has finished seventh in her 200 metre semi-final, after earlier winning her repechage. The 19-year-old Olympic debutant only just missed out on an automatic qualification spot after running a career-best time of 22.89. She then got a second chance, which she won in 23.08 seconds to advance to the semis.

Hockeyroos suffer heartbreaking defeat

The Hockeyroos have lost their quarterfinal to China 3-2. It was their sixth straight Olympic elimination at the quarter-final stage. In a tight match, the Hockeyroos scored first but only led for one minute. China scored three unanswered goals after the Hockeyroos first, before conceding one in the third quarter. They then held on in a tight final quarter, shattering the Aussies Olympic medal dreams.

Sharks stunned in men’s water polo, but still progress to quarters

The Australian Sharks have been upset by Japan, losing a thrilling contest 14-13. The Sharks started brilliantly, scoring the first four goals in short time before Japan warmed into the contest. It was a disappointing loss for the Aussies, but a solid group stage means they will progress to the quarterfinals. They will play against America on Wednesday morning for an opportunity to better their fifth placed finishes at the 1984 and 1992 Olympic Games.
