upstart is the flagship publication of the Department of Communication and Media within the School of Humanities and Social Science at La Trobe University.
upstart is an outlet and a training tool for emerging journalists. It aims to provide a platform for students to develop their skills.
Whatever industry uncertainties prevail, never before has there been a greater need for graduates to be able to point to published work when seeking employment.
As part of this mission upstart conceives its role as an exemplar and a model of journalism as an act of engaged citizenship.
Ultimately, the Department of Communication and Media’s goal is to produce work-ready journalists and communicators.
Inherent in this is the principle of integrity. upstart’s editorial team must be free to follow the evidence in their inquiries and investigations, communicating the results of this to the audience thoroughly and professionally.
The Department of Communication and Media at La Trobe University commits to supporting upstart as an outlet for journalism of integrity.
In particular, the Department makes the following commitments:
- Those working on upstart will perform their roles in accordance with Australian Press Council principles and standards, and in accord with the Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance Code of Ethics.
