Qantas cuts Mount Gambier flights amid rising fuel costs

The airline plans to reduce domestic flights by five percent.

Qantas will cut all flights to and from Mount Gambier starting next month due to rising fuel costs and declining demand.

Flights were previously running four days a week between Adelaide and Mount Gambier, but they will cease on May 18.

The airline’s fuel bill is expected to increase by $600-800 million over the second half of the year due to the conflict in the Middle East.

This comes after Qantas announced they will cut domestic flights across the board and reduce seat capacity by five percent between May 18 and June 30.

According to the ABC, QantasLink CEO Mark Dal Pra said that affected customers would be offered a refund.

“While the recent increase in fuel prices is making the situation more difficult, the previous decline in demand means the route is simply no longer viable for us to continue operating,” he said.

Qantas previously launched the flights between Mount Gambier and Adelaide in March 2021.
