Sydney continues to be hit by one of the wettest Augusts that it has had to deal with for 27 years, according to the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM). The rough weather continuing its onslaught on residents, with the heaviest of falls predicted on Thursday morning, reaching up to 120 millimetres.

BOM senior meteorologist Angus Hines said August is usually one of the drier times of the year, and the rain is “certainly pretty unusual”.

As of Thursday morning, the SES has issued 29 flood warnings across the state.

The weather has stalled some of the rescue efforts on an incident involving a vehicle crashing into Macdonald River in North Sydney late Wednesday night.

The State Emergency Services were contacted around 11:50pm on Wednesday night after reports that a vehicle had entered the river. One of the passengers in his 20s managed to escape the vehicle and was treated on the scene.

The NSW police were told on the scene that two other men who were in the vehicle at the same time are “yet are to be accounted for”.

Inspector Claudette Gebrael from Hawkesbury Police Area Command said that there was the belief the three men were related.

“Initial enquiries show that [the car] may have hit a tree to start with and entered the water,” she said.

The SES and the NSW Rural Fire Services are continuing their search of the area, with any residents who has information encouraged to contact Hawkesbury Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
