A Sunshine shop owner has passed away days after being allegedly assaulted while aiding another shopkeeper during an attempted robbery.

Victoria Police have confirmed Van Viet Truong, aged 60, passed away in hospital on Wednesday after sustaining critical injuries in the alleged attack on Saturday afternoon. Truong operated Hong Hung Asian Grocery with his wife for almost 30 years.

Truong intervened after several youths attempted to rob a nearby store on Hampshire Road and got physical with the shop owner.

The five teenagers, three boys aged 12, 13 and 15, and two 14-year-old girls, were initially charged with affray, violent disorder, intentionally causing serious injury and intentionally causing injury.

Police later withdrew charges against the 13-year-old boy after further investigations exonerated him.

The remaining accused youths have been remanded to appear before a children’s court at a later date.

Detectives said they will consider upgrading the remaining charges following Truong’s death.
