Sussan Ley elected as new Liberal Party leader

Ley is the first woman to lead the party in its 80-year history.

Sussan Ley will lead the Australian Liberal Party, after defeating shadow treasurer Angus Taylor in a party room vote this morning. The result saw Ley win 29 votes to 25, succeeding Peter Dutton as opposition leader for the upcoming parliamentary term.

In her official pitch, Ley said the party needed to rebuild trust within Australian society.

“My election as leader of the Liberal Party would send a very strong signal that we understand things need to be done differently,” she said told her party.

Ley has held the seat of Farrer for the past 25 years, taking on roles such as environment minister and aged care minister before becoming deputy of the opposition in 2022.

This win sees the first female leader of the party elected since it was established in 1944.
