Three men have been charged by New South Wales police, after they were alleged to be planning a hit attempt at a day care centre in Sydney’s south-west.
Yesterday at 3:50pm, two cars were stopped in Revesby and three men aged 18, 19 and 26-years-old were arrested. Upon searching the cars police found two firearms, balaclavas, body worn cameras and jerry cans containing fuel.
The State Crime Commander, Assistant Commissioner Scott Cook, said the arrests reflected the strength of their intelligence capabilities.
“These individuals were being watched, and we moved at the right moment,” he said.
The three men were spotted by detectives under Strike Force Flodline, an investigation into organised crime in Sydney.
Detectives identified the three men as “mobilising” to carry out an offence. They requested for assistance from the tactical operations unit, Pol Air, dog squad and the state intelligence command.
According to Nine News, a Mitsubishi Outlander was stopped, when tactical police surrounded the car with rifles and arrested the two men. A few hundred metres away, the other man in a Mercedes Benz was arrested.
The 18 and 19-year-old men were charged with a number of offences, such as conspiracy to commit murder and possessing an unauthorised pistol. The 26-year-old man was only charged with conspiracy to commit murder and participating in a criminal group.
Detective Superintendent Peter Faux alleged that the three men did not know the victim and were hired.
“They were people who were hired by a syndicate, possibly an offshore syndicate to carry out this murder on their behalf,” he said at a press conference.
Faux also said that there was “never any risk to the public” during the operation.
The identity of the target has not been made public, but police believe he has links to crime.
The men were refused bail and will appear in local Bankstown court later today.
