US President Donald Trump announced 100 percent tariffs on films “produced in Foreign Lands” on his Truth Social platform on Sunday night.
Trump posted to X that this is an effort to save Hollywood from “being devastated” further.
“The Movie Industry in America is DYING a very fast death,” he said. “WE WANT MOVIES MADE IN AMERICA, AGAIN!”
Trump has directed the US Department of Commerce and the US Trade Representative to immediately begin the process of imposing the tariffs.
“Countries are offering all sorts of incentives to draw our filmmakers and studios away from the United States,” he wrote.
He did not mention how these tariffs would be imposed as films are intellectual property and do not fall under goods.
This follows several tariffs Trump has declared since his Presidency began, including tariffs on the uninhabited Heard Island and McDonald Islands. Earlier in the year, the tariffs resulted in major losses in Australian shares.
