US President Donald Trump has threatened an additional 50 percent tariff on imports from China in response to China’s 34 percent tariff retaliation on US goods.
Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Lin Jian said that pressuring or threatening China is “not the right way” to deal with them and referred to Trump’s actions on tariffs as “a typical move of unilateralism, protectionism and economic bullying”.
“China will firmly safeguard its legitimate rights and interests,” Lin said.

“If China does not withdraw its 34% increase above their already long-term trading abuses by tomorrow, April 8th, 2025, the United States will impose additional Tariffs on China of 50%, effective April 9th,” he wrote.
Trump also added that all talks with China about their requested meetings with the US will be terminated, so it is unclear whether the countries will meet to discuss these tariffs.
This trade war between the US and China has resulted in a record high of 84 percent on tariffs.
