Works underway on the new West Tarneit Station

The new station in Melbourne's outer west is being built to reduce congestion and pressure on nearby Tarneit Station.

Major works have started on the new West Tarneit Station after final designs were released by the Allan government.

The new station, situated on the Geelong Line, is set to be finished in 2026 and will feature separated walking and cycling pathways, secure bike storage, and 17,000 native trees.

Minister for Transport Infrastructure, Gabrielle Williams, said the station will help ease congestion “ensuring” more Victorians can get to where they need to go sooner.

The Victorian government hopes the new station will reduce pressure on nearby Tarneit Station, which serves almost 2 million passengers a year and is the second busiest station on the regional network, behind Southern Cross Station.

Member for Tarneit, Dylan Wright, said the station will be “modern and safe”, including 400 parking spaces and a four-bay bus interchange.

“The new West Tarneit Station will make it easier for our growing community to catch public transport,” he said.

In addition to 189 extra services running on the Wyndham Vale Line each week, a new bus route will be set up to run between West Tarneit Station and Tarneit station. The existing 182 route will also be re-aligned to service the new station. The new bus route will be funded by Labor’s $162 million investment into new and upgraded bus services.

The works is part of the Level Crossing Removal Project and follows the removal of three level crossings in Deer Park and Ardeer.
