President Xi Jinping arrived in Moscow on Wednesday after President Vladimir Putin invited him to attend Russia’s military parade.
The Victory Day parade is going to be held on May 9 in commemoration of Russia’s victory over Nazi Germany and the end of WWII in 1945.
Twenty-nine other foreign leaders have been invited to attend, including those from Brazil and Vietnam. However, last month Putin described the Chinese leader as the “main guest” for the event.
Xi’s four-day stay will include a meeting with Putin where they will discuss the “most sensitive” topics surrounding Ukraine, relations with the US and the Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline has been scheduled for Thursday as indicated by Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov.
A statement released by China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the alliance between Russia and China as an “everlasting friendship” that “surges onward unceasingly”.
Director of the China program at the Washington-based Stimson Centre think tank, said that in recent times the two allies are more incentivised to “present a solid image of their alignment”, as reported by Nine News.
The meeting is happening in the context of the US recently escalating its trade war with China and mending its ties with Ukraine through trade deals.
