Zelenskyy describes Putin’s 72-hour ceasefire declaration as “attempt at manipulation”

Russian president has timed the ceasefire to occur at the 80-year anniversary of the Soviet Union's victory over Germany in WWII.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has responded to President Vladimir Putin’s announcement of a 72-hour ceasefire, calling it a “new attempt at manipulation” in a video on X.

The ceasefire will begin on May 8 and marks the 80-year anniversary of the Soviet Union and its allies’ victory over Germany in WWII.

“For some reason, everyone has to wait until May 8,” Zelenskyy said.

This ceasefire follows another that was declared over Easter time that Ukraine leaders claim was broken by Russia.

Putin’s announcement came shortly after US President Donald Trump, who is calling for a permanent ceasefire, criticised Putin’s attack on Ukraine last week on Truth Social.

“I am not happy with the Russian strikes on KYIV. Not necessary, and very bad timing. Vladimir, STOP! 5000 soldiers a week are dying. Lets get the Peace Deal DONE,” Trump wrote.

Both Trump and Zelenskyy met before the Pope’s funeral last week, discussing hopes for a permanent ceasefire with topics of protecting lives and preventing wars.

Zelenskyy took to Telegram to make an update on the “good meeting” with Trump.

“It was a very symbolic meeting that has the potential to become historic if we achieve joint results. Thank you, President Donald Trump!” he wrote.
