Albanese refuses to act on bullying allegations

Labor senators say the claims are "untrue".

Anthony Albanese has confirmed this morning that he will not launch an investigation into Kimberly Kitching’s claims of bullying within the Labor party.

In the two weeks since Kitching’s death, multiple former Labor MPs have advocated for an investigation into her claims that she was bullied.

In an interview on Nine Network’s Today show, Albanese denied these accusations were true.

“There were no complaints put in, in any formal sense at all about issues.  The one issue that was raised was Kimberly’s position in the Labor party,” he said.

Kitching’s closest friends and former Labor MPs have called for an investigation into the bullying claims over the past week. Former Labor MP Michael Danby said what Kitching went through was “nothing short of bullying”.

“It’s a fine line, people are entitled to fierce disagreements, but it was too much in my opinion what was done crossed that fine line and people should say they’re sorry and they regret it,” he said.

At her funeral on Monday, Kitching’s husband reaffirmed these allegations.

“Her friends and ferociously loyal staff are angry about how she was treated,” he said.

Three Labor senators including Penny Wong, Kristina Keneally and Katy Gallagher who allegedly bullied Kitching, attended the funeral and issued a joint statement last Friday.

“The allegations of bullying are untrue,” they wrote.

“Politics is a challenging profession. Contests can be robust and interactions difficult. All of its participants at times act or speak in ways that can impact on others negatively. We have and do reflect on this, as individuals and as leaders.”

“All three of us will be attending Senator Kitching’s funeral. This follows engagement with Senator Kitching’s family about our attendance.”
