Heeney named focus of police investigation

Sponsors cut ties and fans threaten boycotts after Isaac Heeney is reportedly linked to a police investigation.

Sydney Swans vice-captain Isaac Heeney has been revealed as the focus of a Victoria Police investigation into an alleged sexual assault.

This comes after a reported incident at the Pullman Hotel in Melbourne where the Swans players stayed following Sunday night’s 36 point win over Essendon.

On Wednesday, the Swans’ announced a decision to ban five players for the remainder of the season due to a “serious breach of expected Club behaviour and standards”, which they stated was independent to the police investigation.

As a result of the naming, Colgate has suspended their highly lucrative sponsorship deal with Heeney.

Detectives from Victoria Police’s Sex Crimes Squad are expected to travel to Sydney today to continue their investigation.

7NEWS reporter Mitch Cleary has confirmed that Heeney is the only player who has attended a police station to speak with authorities so far.

Speaking on Nine’s Today Show, local MP Allegra Spender said the situation has caused “huge disappointment” for the community, as local anger fuels a potential fan boycott of Sunday’s SCG double-header.

The fallout has also rocked the club internally. Speaking on Fox Footy, legendary former coach John Longmire admitted the Swans’ famous “Bloods culture” has “taken a big hit,” adding that it will take significant time for the club to rebuild community trust.

No charges have been laid and the allegations remain unproven as police inquiries continue.
