Australia will sign its biggest defence export deal

Australia will supply Germany over 100 infantry vehicle's by 2025.

Queensland hi-tech vehicles are set to be exported to the German military, making it Australia’s biggest defence export deal in history.

The agreement, passed through the German parliament, will see the Rheinmetall Defence Australia build more than 100 Boxer armoured vehicles from its manufacturing factory in Ipswich, Queensland.

Australian Defence Industry Minister Pat Conroy is expected to sign the deal today. He says the plan will have a positive impact on the economy.

“This is a great result for Australia and a testament to our defence industry,” he said.

“It will create more than 600 direct jobs alone in Queensland and many more than that in the supply chain.”

Last year, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese met with the German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to discuss defences and trade.  Following Albanese’s trip to Berlin, it was announced Australia was in principle agreement to supply the German military with the infantry vehicle’s by 2025.

“This is one of the biggest defence sales in Australia’s history and is worth over 1 billion to the Australian economy in the production and supply of these vehicles,” Albanese said.
