Australian Footbag Championships return to Sydney

You might well have played 'hacky sack' before but did you know that it is recognised sport with it's own world championships? Daniel Boyle previews the upcoming Australian Footbag Championships which are being held in Sydney over Easter.

Sydney will once again play host to the Australian Footbag Championships over the Easter weekend. Footbag, often known as “Hacky Sack” involves players performing a range of tricks by moving their feet and legs around a small bag.

The events will take place over two days. Saturday will take the players to the Royal Easter Show, while Sunday’s events will take place on the rooftop at the brand new Sydney Harbour YHA, overlooking the Opera House and Harbour Bridge.

Competing for top honours this year will be Hobart’s Jeremy O’Wheel, current Australian champion and multiple world record holder, the clear favourite for the event. Hoping to stop this will be Daniel Boyle from Canberra, currently ranked 29th in the world in the Shred 30 event.

Players will compete in a number of events including routines, circle competition, Sick 3 and Shred 30. These will be judged by a panel of experts. The best players will go on to compete at the World Championships in San Francisco in August.
