Former President Bill Clinton and his wife, Hillary Clinton, have been subpoenaed by the US Congressional committee to provide information in an ongoing investigation into Jeffrey Epstein.
House Oversight Chair James Comer issued the subpoenas on Tuesday as pressure has mounted from both political parties.
This follows eight former top law enforcement officials who have also been summonsed, including James Comey, a former FBI director. The Department of Justice (DOJ) have been called to provide Congress with any Epstein files in its possession, with victims’ names redacted.
The House has called for those who have been subpoenaed to give “testimony related to horrific crimes perpetrated by Jeffrey Epstein.”
Bill Clinton was among several high-profile acquaintances of Epstein, a wealthy financier, before the criminal investigation against him in Florida became public two decades ago.
Comer sent letters to the Clintons, writing to Hillary about the relationship between her and the convicted sex trafficker.
“Your family appears to have had a close relationship with both Jeffrey Epstein and his co-conspirator Ghislaine Maxwell,” he wrote.
Bill Clinton’s deposition date has been set for 14 October, and Hillary’s is scheduled for 9 October. Others who received subpoenas were given dates ranging from mid-August through early October.
Multiple former presidents have voluntarily testified before Congress, but none has been compelled to do so.
