Charles Martinet will no longer be voicing Mario

The 67-year-old has worked with Nintendo for 27 years.

After 27 years in the recording booth, Charles Martinet is stepping down as the voice of the Mario franchise.

Known for being the voice actor of characters including Mario, Luigi and Wario, the 67-year-old began his journey with the franchise in the 1996 video game Super Mario 64.

Nintendo announced the news on X overnight, thanking Martinet for his contribution.

“It has been an honour working with Charles to help bring to life for so many years and we want to thank and celebrate him,” the company said.

The American actor will continue with the franchise as the newly appointed Mario Ambassador. Nintendo said that in his new role, Martinet will “continue to travel the world” and “share the joy of Mario”.

Martinet retweeted Nintendo’s statement saying he was excited about the future ahead.

“My new Adventure begins! You are all Numba [sic] One in my heart! #woohoo !!!!!!!”
