COVID-19 global update – 5 August

Global death toll nears 700,000 as Victoria records another 725 cases today.

Australia

Victoria posts a new daily record in cases and deaths with 725 new cases, and 15 deaths including a man in his 30s.

Today marks a return to remote learning across the state as non-essential workplaces must close from 11:59pm tonight. Workers will also be required to carry permits signed by their employer.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has also announced today that elective surgery will be put on hold.

Queensland will close its border to NSW and ACT from 1am on August 8. Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says that exemption will be “limited” and Queenslanders who return will have to pay for mandatory hotel quarantine.

Greece

The Greek government on Tuesday has announced new measures to help curb the spread of COVID-19.

This comes as the country records 469 new cases in the last week.

Netherlands

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the Netherlands almost doubled last week.

A further 2,588 new cases were reported over the past week, 1,259 more than were reported the week before.

Philippines

Tens of millions of people have again entered lockdown in the Philippines after confirmed infections have surged past 100,000.

The two-week lockdown comes after the country announced a record new 5,032 new infections on Sunday.

Spain

Spain has registered it highest daily COVID-19 increase in four months reporting 5,760 new cases on Tuesday.

With 18,191 cases over the past week the government is starting to tighten its restrictions in the area.

United States

US President Donald Trump has defended his administration’s effort to combat the COVID-19 pandemic in an interview with Axios.

President Trump was interviewed by Australian journalist Jonathan Swan, who questioned the president’s notions of control, saying 1,000 Americans are dying a day.

“They are dying. That’s true. And you – it is what it is,” said Trump.

“But that doesn’t mean we aren’t doing everything we can. It’s under control as much as you can control it.”

The United States has averaged more than 1,000 COVID-19 related deaths for the ninth straight day.

More than 4.74 million cases and 153,000 deaths have been reported across the United States since the pandemic began.

The four-time tournament winner follows women’s world number one Ash Barty with the Australian also pulling out of Flushing Meadows due to the threat of COVID-19.
