Donald Trump may be unable to pay US$464 million bond

Trump reached out to 30 insurance companies to underwrite his bond

Former President of the United States Donald Trump may be unable to make the US$464 million (AU$707 million) bond after losing the civil fraud case held earlier this year.

Trump’s lawyer told an appeals court that he has reached out to 30 different insurance companies in the hope one of them could underwrite his bond that is due at the end of the month.

“The amount of the judgment, with interest, exceeds US$464 million, and very few bonding companies will consider a bond of anything approaching that magnitude,” Trump’s lawyers wrote.

Gary Giulietti, an executive with the insurance brokerage Lockton Companies hired by Trump, said that a bond of that size is rarely posed to individuals.

“In the unusual circumstance that a bond of this size is issued, it is provided to the largest public companies in the world, not to individuals or privately held businesses,”  he said.

Trumps assets could be seized if he is unable to pay the US$464 million owed. If he cannot afford the judgements he will have to declare bankruptcy.

Writer E. Jean Carroll’s defamation case against Trump constitutes over US$83 million of the total amount owed. Carroll’s attorney Roberta Kaplan is sure Trump is going to have to pay.

“I think he’s going to have to pay,” Kaplan told CNN. “And whether it requires him to sell or to put a lien on something to get a loan, that’s his problem, not ours. He’s going to pay.”

The remainder owed by Trump is from the civil fraud case where he was found liable for manipulating his net worth.
