Dozens killed in Pakistan and Afghanistan from severe weather

Flash floods and landslides are expected to follow in the next few days

Authorities have declared a state of emergency in the southwest of Pakistan after lightning and heavy rain has killed at least 69 people in Pakistan and Afghanistan over the last three days.

Twenty-eight people have died in Pakistan from the effects of rainstorms and lightning strikes since Friday. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) of Pakistan have issued warnings about flash floods and landslides as rain is expected to fall in the next few days.

Meanwhile in Afghanistan, over 600 houses were damaged or completely destroyed and hundreds are left displaced after losing their homes. The flooding has destroyed large areas of agricultural land and over 85 kilometers of roads.

Intense flooding and rainstorms in Pakistan resulted in at least 36 deaths, leaving many people injured and property damaged over the last three days. The heavy rain flow has caused dozens of houses to collapse in the northwest and eastern Punjab province.

“I have asked the NDMA to coordinate with the provinces…and for the NDMA to provide relief goods to areas where damages occurred,” said Prime Minister of Pakistan, Shehbaz Sharif.

The capital of Pakistan, Islamabad, was also affected by the severe weather conditions which killed seven people over the weekend. Eight people including four children died when the roofs of their houses collapsed in north-western Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
