Fatal bus crash on Great Ocean Road

Police are today investigating the scene of a bus crash along the Great Ocean Road, which occurred yesterday at around 5pm, claiming the life of one man and leaving a woman seriously injured.

Thirty passengers, including a number of children, were on the bus when it swerved off the road, rolled and then crashed into a tree in Glenaire, a small town along the Great Ocean Road between Apollo Bay and Lavers Hill.

According to authorities, the bus was towing a trailer.

The 49-year-old male bus driver who was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries has since been released. He is due to be questioned by Major Collision Investigation Unit Detectives.

Detectives have closed the scene of the accident along the Great Ocean Road, a popular tourist road in Melbourne’s south-west, as they investigate the circumstances of the fatal crash.

A 38-year-old man, believed to be a Taiwanese tourist, died at the scene.

Ambulance Victoria confirmed that a woman in her 30s was trapped under the bus, eventually freed and then taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with pelvis injuries where she remains in a stable but serious condition.

Six passengers were transferred to Geelong hospital in a stable condition.

“Accommodation was organised for the remaining members of the group”, a spokesman for Ambulance Victoria confirmed.

Police are appealing to any witnesses of the crash to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 00.
